    What Is Thermally Modified Wood?

TMD is real wood that has been heated to ≈400 °F (≈200 °C) in an oxygen-free kiln, then re-balanced with steam.

This heat alters the cell walls, drives out sugars that attract insects, and cuts the wood’s ability to absorb moisture. The result is a board that stays straight, shrugs off decay, and contains zero added chemicals.

Why Homeowners Choose TMD Over Cedar, PVC & Composites?

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Question

    Quick Answer

    Will it warp or cup?

Dimensional change is reduced by ~60 %, so boards stay flush even through four-season climates.

Do I have to oil it?

Only if you want to maintain the original tone. Structural performance is unaffected either way.

How does cost compare to cedar?

Up-front price is similar to clear-grade cedar; lifetime cost is lower because TMD lasts longer and needs less upkeep.

Is it safe for kids & pets?

    Yes. It’s food-contact safe—no added resins, no VOC off-gassing.

    Can I install it myself?

If you can hang standard wood siding, you can hang TMD. Boards arrive dried, straight, and end-matched to speed installation.
